Site

Soil Science Education Centre

The county of Lancashire has some of the most fertile, nutrient and energy laden land and soil in the world, supporting farming livestock, fruit and vegetative growth and also fuel production. Many other activities have benefited from this area, such as Mining, Shipping, Ship building, Car manufacturing, textile production, Market places, and was even a settlement of a military zone of the Roman empire. However recently, emphasis has been placed upon its soil and is an area where research is on going.

The site we have been given is the area around Winterhill, located East of the nearby towns of Chorley and Adlington. Slightly North of Horwich. As well as being a rich source of land and soil, the site has whitnessed may events over the years and has quite an extensive background ranging from ufo sightings, to plane crashes, and even murders. Weapons such as arrows and axes, show this site used to home to hunter gathers dating back to the bronze age and stone age. The site is also home to many old mines which are now all closed to the public, many old ruins and also some large reservoirs at the foot of the hill.

It offers amazing panoramic views across the manchester area and on good days even to the coastline of blackpool and to the mountains of the lake district.
