Precedents

Title: Water Theatre
Architect: Grimshaw Architects
Location: Las Palma, Canary Islands, Spain
Status: Design

Description: A design Proposal from Grimshaw Architects. Its part of a masterplan of the area to make a move towards self-sufficiency in renewable energy and fresh water. This scheme employed takes advantage of the microclimate - the sunny conditions, steady wind direction and cold seawater to create large amounts of desalinated water for the town. The evaporators and condensers which are the basis of this technology were arranged to create a back-drop to an outdoor amphitheatre. A clever use of space which in turn in also eco-friendly as its not two seperate things, i.e its not just a infrastructure for sustainability but uses it aswell so a whole other building would have to be created to accomodate the theatre.

Title: Molde Jazzhouse + Theatre
Architect: 3XN
Location: Molde, Norway
Status: Construction

Description: This project merges the building into a public square and allows the public to use it a public space or sit while shows take place within this area. In this way, the gallery and the café of the inside, are opened up to a free flow between the interior and the exterior of the building. It uses local materials and the 3 horizontal strips are simple which blends into the context of simply shaped buildings.

Title: National Gallery of Art
Architect: Bjarke Ingels
Location: Nuuk, Greenland
Status: In Progress

Description: A simple shape which simply just sits on the landscape to create something quite interesting while keeping haromony between the building and the landscape. Also the use of ramps within the building creates a simple circulation while also creating a sense of a journey around the art so keeps a sense of mystery of 'whats over there? whats up here?' etc etc. Also the circular shape of the building creates this central void where sculptures can sit and create yet another exhibition space as this central void can be viewed from all around the building.

Title: Asser Levy Park Amphitheater
Architect: Grimshaw Architects
Location: New York, USA
Status: Approaching Completion

Description: Part of a regeneration project of Coney Island, and this will be the new gateway and a glimpse to whats to come. Sustainability is used wherever possible this includes a large green roof, environmentally friendly materials and habitat restoration. The use of space is quite interesting including the space created underneath the large public green space, suitable for workshops etc which people can see into while passing the building, sparking a sense interest in the passers by.
